There are three BBQ areas at CERN: Prevessin, Meyrin and LHC PA2. You can book one of these areas through this link: https://indico.cern.ch/rooms/book
Alternatively, there is a park near Plage de Vengeron, on the lake in Chambesy. Grilling/barbecue facilities are available, but you must bring your own coal and lighters. This can be reached by taking the train number R 11057 from the train station in Geneva (Gare Cornavin) in direction of Coppet, the stop is Chambesy. From there you must walk 15 minutes to arrive at Plage de Vengeron (Route de Lausanne 284, 1292 Chambésy).

The standard procedure is to close your summer student account 2 weeks after the end date of your contract with CERN.
If you require files related to your work at CERN, then you should discuss this with your supervisor and arrange that the files are copied elsewhere (e.g. to a Internet Service Provider or to a CD or other media).
The CERN email account will be closed at the same time as your computer account. Therefore you should be able to have access to your emails through http://mmmservices.web.cern.ch/mmmservices/ up to two weeks after your contract end.
Unfortunately not! Why not talk about this to French Summer Students? One may offer to become a "French summer teacher".
You could also join the CERN language tandem programme or check the language schools in Geneva (for example "Migros") to see whether they have summer courses available.

On www.budget.com and www.alamo.com seem to offer the cheapest deals. However, these prices are only valid if you book online, and you must make your reservation at least 3 days before you want to hire the car, in order for them to confirm your booking and to guarantee those prices.
Alternatively, if you decide last-minute to hire a car, this is possible at Geneva Airport.
It is not only the bus company which sells passes; you can also get them in a lot of kiosks, listed in the following link.
The nearest place to CERN to buy a buss pass is in Balexert Shopping Centre.

On www.yallo.ch (does cheap sim cards – text to anywhere in Europe for 15 Cents, a call to any other phone for 22-25 Cents / minute in most countries – see list of countries here: https://www.yallo.ch/kp/ext/pdf/yallo_tarif_overview_e.pdf
Any electrical shop such as Fnac, Fust, both of which are in Balexert and in the city centre, can advise you on options.

You will have to pay the doctor yourself first and then fill in the claim form attaching required documents in original (prescriptions, invoices and proof of payment). If you go to see a doctor in Switzerland please ask for the bill right away; otherwise it is sent by mail several weeks later and you might already have left CERN. The completed form should be submitted to UNIQA by post or in person to their office in the Main Building (Building 63-R-001), dedicated pre-printed envelopes are available from the department secretariats. You will be reimbursed directly to your bank account. The delay is up to 2 weeks. If you leave within those 2 weeks and you haven't received your reimbursement yet, make sure you give UNIQA your home bank account number in order for the money to be transferred to this account.
To "help limit the cost of administration", no claim should be submitted for less than CHF 10,-- (Unless it’s your last claim before leaving CERN).
The cover and conditions of the CERN Health Insurance Scheme (managed by UNIQA) is defined in the Rules of the CERN Health Insurance Scheme (the CHIS Rules). As a Student you have the “Normal Health Insurance Cover”. The list of benefits (Annex I in the CHIS Rules) defines which costs you can claim reimbursement for, the applicable reimbursement rate and any additional conditions.
Please note that:
you are reimbursed 5% more (reimbursement bonus) for e.g. visits to doctors, costs for medicine in the countries listed in the first table in Annex I in the CHIS Rules and
any given maximum reimbursement ceiling (for 12 months) is reduced proportionally for contracts of shorter duration.
Further information, forms and the CHIS Rules and other official documents are found on the CHIS website.
You can contact the medical service (Tel: 73186 / Building 57) for urgent problems.
You can also contact the 'Social Affairs' (building 33/1-038) where there is a list of doctors (general practitioners and specialist doctors) who speak a variety of different languages.
In the event of an emergency, contact the fire brigade immediately by calling 112 (inside CERN, call 74444).

CERN rents out bicycles (in summer there are long waiting lists!). Ask your departmental secretary upon arrival or click here.

As a Summer Student you will receive a subsistence allowance to cover the costs of your stay in the local area. This allowance amounts to 90 CHF net per day as of your first contract date until you last contract date (including weekends).
Please make sure that you have enough money for the first week at CERN.
Students receive, on the day of their arrival, a prepaid card on which an advance of 2600 CHF is paid. Students are provided with instructions on the use of their card as well as applicable fees. They have an obligation to read it.
Every four weeks (if applicable), an advance of 2600 CHF is paid on the prepaid card.
